In this blog post, we will elaborate on our process behind our products. Our mission is not only to create beautiful interior products, but also to inspire others to a more circular way of thinking within design in the furniture and interior industry. At Underflod, we are driven by our passion to be able to contribute to a more circular future, where waste wood becomes high-quality products that can add style and elegance to any home.
In 2022, we started a collaboration with Nørre Snede Prison and the Odense workshops, which are behind the production of our products today. This provides work, skills and practical experience to some of the more vulnerable groups in society. We believe that EVERYONE deserves a chance to develop and create something positive for themselves and for others in this life.
From wood waste to serving tray: A recycled transformation
Our Hermod serving tray is designed and inspired by the high and long bows of Viking ships, while the name comes from Norse mythology. The tray is made from local recycled materials from Funen. The wood for the serving tray itself comes from recycling stations and Red Cross shops, which can consist of discarded tables, various tabletops or other recycled wooden furniture, which we transform into our beautiful and elegant serving tray. The aluminum is the purest type of aluminum you can get, and is a minimum of 90 percent recycled. See the serving tray here.
From table legs to coasters: A creative idea generation
Our coaster is produced from table legs, tabletops and recycled furniture that we use for our Hermod serving tray. In the web generation phase, we had a lot of table legs left over from various table tops and recycled furniture from the recycling stations, which were of good quality and therefore thought, "we must be able to make something out of them". We went to the workshop and thought of cutting out the table legs as if they were slices of rye bread and from this came the shape and the idea for our coasters. See our coasters here.
Thin pieces of wood, great function: unique approach to the production of wooden coat racks
Our Hejmdal coat rack is made from recycled metal from steel production. In addition, the wood on our coat racks is the same recycled wood we use, among other things, for our Hermod serving tray. The process behind our coat rack arose from the fact that some of the pieces of wood we received for our serving tray were too thin to make serving trays out of. Therefore, they could instead be used as a back panel and from this came the idea for our coat rack. The hooks themselves are machined in sheltered workshops and have a pre-consumer recycled powder coating added. See the beautiful wooden coat rack here.
Behind our cutting board and the unique production
Like our other products, our cutting board also has a completely unique process behind it. Our cutting boards are made from cuttings from tabletop production, mainly from the kitchen industry. We also use these cutouts for our Hermod serving tray, but what is left over is gathered into small sticks, glued together and then sanded and shaped into our cutting boards. In conclusion, they are produced in the same way as many of our other products, namely in social economic workshops locally here in Denmark. You can get our cutting board in 2 different shapes and colors. See the cutting board here.
We have several exciting products on the way. You can see our current product range here .
