From waste wood to high-quality circular interior products

In this blog post, we will elaborate on the process behind our products. Our mission is not just to create beautiful interior products, but also to inspire others towards a more circular mindset within design in the furniture and interior industry. At Underflod, we are driven by our passion to contribute to a more circular future, where waste wood is transformed into high-quality products that can add style and elegance to any home.

In 2022, we initiated a collaboration with Nørre Snede Prison and Odense workshops, who are currently responsible for the production of our products. This provides work, skills, and practical experience for some of the more vulnerable groups in society. We believe that EVERYONE deserves a chance to develop and create something positive for themselves and for others in this life.

From wood waste to serving tray: A recycled transformation

Our Hermod serving tray is designed and inspired by the high and long arches of Viking ships, while the name originates from Norse mythology. The tray is made from local recycled materials from Funen. The wood for the serving tray itself comes from recycling centres and Red Cross stores, which can consist of discarded tables, various table tops, or other recycled wooden furniture that we transform into our beautiful and elegant serving tray. The aluminium is the purest type of aluminium available, and is at least 90 percent recycled. See the serving tray here.

From table legs to coasters: A creative ideation

Our coasters are produced from table legs, tabletops, and recycled furniture that we use for our Hermod serving tray. During the ideation phase, we had a lot of leftover table legs from various tabletops and recycled furniture from recycling centres, which were in good quality. We thought, "we must be able to make something out of these." We went to the workshop and came up with the idea of cutting the table legs, as if they were slices of rye bread, and this is how the shape and idea for our coasters came about. See our coasters here.

Thin pieces of wood, great function: Unique approach to producing wooden coat racks

Our Hejmdal coat rack is made from recycled metal from steel production. Additionally, the wood on our coat racks is the same recycled wood we use for our Hermod serving tray, among other things. The process behind our coat rack came about because some of the wood pieces we received for our serving tray were too thin to make serving trays from. Therefore, they could instead be used as a back panel, and this is how the idea for our coat rack emerged. The hooks themselves are processed in sheltered workshops and are given a pre-consumer recycled powder coating. See the beautiful wooden coat rack here.

Behind our cutting board and its unique production

Like our other products, our cutting board also has a completely unique process behind it. Our cutting boards are made from offcuts from tabletop production, mainly from the kitchen industry. We also use these cutouts for our Hermod serving tray, but what is left over is collected in small staves, glued together, and then sanded and shaped into our cutting boards. Finally, they are produced in the same way as many of our other products, namely in social economy workshops locally here in Denmark. You can get our cutting board in 2 different shapes and colours. See the cutting board here.
