How to treat your cutting board

A guide to maintaining your wooden cutting board

All Underflod cutting boards are made from 100% waste wood from the furniture industry in Denmark. Although all Underflod cutting and tapas boards are treated with natural oils, it can be a good idea to occasionally give your cutting board a little extra treatment to maintain its quality, so that it stays beautiful and usable for many years.

5 tips on how to better care for your cutting board

Below you will find a guide consisting of 5 tips on how to best maintain and care for your cutting board.

  1. Cleaning your cutting board
  2. Air drying and storing your cutting board
  3. Bad odors can be removed with 2 ingredients
  4. Oil treatment of cutting board
  5. Separation of ingredients

1. Cleaning your cutting board

After using your cutting board, wash it immediately with hot water and a mild dish soap. Avoid leaving your cutting board in water for extended periods, as this can affect the wood material of your cutting board.

Therefore, it is also a huge no-no to put your wooden cutting board in the dishwasher, even if it can be tempting. A wooden cutting board does not tolerate constant heat and intense humidity well, and by putting your cutting board in the dishwasher, your cutting board can crack and develop mold.

2. Air drying and storing your cutting board

After washing your cutting board, make sure to dry it thoroughly with a clean cloth, and let it air dry in a place where it can dry properly, e.g., against a wall. If you put your cutting board in a cupboard or drawer, you prevent it from drying properly, which can lead to mold growth on your cutting board.

3. Remove bad odors from your cutting board with 2 ingredients

With frequent use of your cutting board, it can over time develop an odor that you can get rid of by using 2 ingredients. All you need is a tablespoon of flake salt and one lemon. Lemon is known to be a natural bleaching agent, and by using salt, which has an antibacterial effect, it can help remove odors and stains from your cutting board. Simply cut a lemon in half and pour flake salt over your cutting board.

Then rub your lemon around the cutting board while the salt is on it. Finally, wash the cutting board with warm water and a mild dish soap.

Tip: As an alternative to salt, you can also use a tablespoon of baking soda.

4. Extend the beauty of your cutting board with oil treatment

To preserve the quality of your cutting board, we recommend that you occasionally apply an oil to treat your cutting board to create a protective surface and maintain the quality of the wood.

For oiling, we recommend using one of the following oils - Grape seed, kernel, rapeseed or sunflower oil. Apply one of the oils to a dry cutting board and let it sit for a while before washing it with water and a mild dish soap.

Point of attention: If you have considered using olive oil and have an oak cutting board, your cutting board may end up with a very dark surface, darker than desired.

5. Separate the use of your cutting board for different ingredients

As a final tip to keep your cutting board beautiful and, not least, clean in the best possible way, you can advantageously separate your cutting boards for different foods. Almost everyone knows the rule that raw meat and vegetables do not belong together. Therefore, it is a good idea to have one cutting board separately for meat and another for vegetables, so you avoid unnecessary bacteria from each other and thus achieve the best hygiene when using your cutting boards for cooking.
